Second day of DWHC International Competition sees huge turnout

DUBAI: A large number of visitors, including locals as well as foreign expatriates, participated on the second day of the Dubai World Hospitality Championship (DWHC) 2014 International Competition.

The participating teams included the Lebanese, Moroccan, Palestinians and Saudi Arabian national teams, who offered traditional and innovative dishes in front of an expert jury specialised in the art of cooking and hospitality.

The 12 participating national teams were recently received at a seminar in advance at the Meydan Hotel Dubai.

They were intimated regarding the terms, regulations and the criteria used in the arbitration process in preparation for the ‘International Competition’.

Majid Al Marri, Director of International Competition and Hospitality Sector Competition at DWHC 2014, said, “The International Competition celebrates the Emirati, Gulf and Arab heritage with the participation of 12 teams from the UAE, Kingdom of Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. We welcomed all their enquiries and made some clarifications during the recent seminar, which delivered a robust performance with high level of creativity, excellence and professionalism during the competition,” he added.

Yusuf Akiki, Manager, Lebanese Team, said, “I was privileged to take part in many cooking championships in the past but this is our first international participation. We are honoured that we participated in this leading event in Dubai, which continues to prove itself as a pioneer in the hospitality industry. We thank the organising committee for inviting us and for their extensive support.” Maher Ibrahim, Manager of Saudi Arabia Team, expressed his delight to come to Dubai to represent Saudi Arabia in DWHC, which offers the highest international levels of professionalism.

“We delivered the well-known traditional Saudi dishes in fusion style, in addition to a variety of Saudi desserts presented in an innovative way with the hope to receive positive feedback and win the title. We thank the organisers of DWHC and wish all the best to our team as well as the other participants.”

The three-day DWHC 2014 is being organised by Za’abeel Palace Hospitality in cooperation with the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS) and The Emirates Culinary Guild (ECG), and with the support of Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for SME Development, Dubai Press Club, Emaar Properties and Flydubai.

A Kids Competition was held between over 60 students (young males and females aged 7 to 15 years of age).

This category will be limited to Emirati school students and aimed at attracting and encouraging young male and female students to enter the hospitality sector.

Participants are expected to gain skills like hospitality etiquette and cooking while also competing in activities like preparing snacks such as sandwiches, decorate cupcakes and arrange dining tables.

Amena Al Dhaheri, Manager of Emirati Competition at DWHC, pointed that the Kids Competition category aims to teach children on how to be independent and self-reliant while also enhancing their culinary capabilities.

“Through this category, we seek to prepare children as they enter into the world of hospitality and learn about its basic principles. DWHC 2014 will be a good opportunity to increase international awareness about an important aspect of our culture and heritage, where participants will prepare Emirati dishes in traditional ways to be judged by a professional jury, and visitors will also have the opportunity to taste these dishes,” she said.
