PESHAWAR: Senior Awami National Party (ANP) leader Barrister Haroon Bilour and 19 others were killed and nearly three dozens others wounded when a suicide bomber targeted an election rally in  Pakistan’s Peshawar city on Tuesday night.

The Taliban claimed the bombing on Wednesday, calling it “the beginning of revenge.”

ANP candidate Haroon, who was due to contest the July 25 general election, was targeted for his party’s “anti-Islam policies,” said Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TPP) spokesman Mohammad Khurasani in a statement following the Tuesday night attack.

In December 2012, Haroon’s father, Bashir Bilour, a former senior minister and ANP leader was also killed in a suicide attack in Peshawar.

Senior superintendent of police, operations, Javed Iqbal confirmed that the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber. “Haroon along with others is martyred in the blast,” he said and added that the head and others body parts of the bomber have been recovered.
