Sultan decrees protection of Sharjah’s cultural heritage

SHARJAH: His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah issued an Emiri Decree regarding the organisation and protection of the cultural heritage of the Emirate of Sharjah.

Emiri Decree No. 5 of 2017 has named the competent authorities tasked to manage, protect and promote cultural heritage in all local, regional and international events and co-ordinate among them to unify legislations pertaining to protection of heritage in accordance with the international agreements and charters.

Under the Decree, the Sharjah Antiquities Authority, Sharjah Institute for Heritage and the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority or Shurooq, in coordination among them, will discharge all necessary missions, specialities and powers to protect, manage and promote cultural heritage, including setting up necessary policies and strategic plans to be implemented in this regard. The Decree also states that these authorities will be responsible for promoting the heritage and intellectual heritage of the emirate in all local, regional and global events.

The Decree is effective from the date of issuance and other competent authorities should implement its provisions. It also annuls all rules that contradict its provisions, and shall be published in the Official Gazette.

Meet with Professor

Sheikh Sultan as President of the University of Sharjah, met Professor Alvaro Simon de Blas, Director-General of European Business and Innovation Centre Network in Malaga.

De Blas was welcomed on his visit to the University of Sharjah to discuss ways for improving student services, as well as academic and scientific programmes.

The main aim of the meeting was to enable the university to improve its international rankings.  After exchanging ideas and discussing potential collaboration in the fields of science and research, both institutions agreed to pursue the creation of an effective partnership between their academic and scientific departments.

The meeting was also attended by Dr Tarik Bin Khadem, Head of the Human Resources Department; Dr Rashid Al Leem, Head of Sharjah Water and Electricity Authority; Noura Al Noman, Head of the Executive Office of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, as well as several university board members including Dr Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Director of the Sharjah University.

Sheikh Sultan, as President of the University of Sharjah (UoS) has praised the accomplishments of the University of Sharjah, hoping that this will improve the university’s ranking among its peers at local, regional and global levels.

He made his remarks while chairing the 42nd meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University at his office.

Sheikh Sultan extended thanks and appreciation to members of the Board and university’s management for their efforts for making the university one of the best institutions in the region.

After approving the minutes of the previous meeting of the board, the meeting listened to a report by Chancellor Dr Humaid Mjol Al Nuaimi in which he talked about the university’s achievements during the academic year 2015-2016.

Al Nuaimi thanked Sheikh Sultan for his prudent directives and unlimited financial and moral support for the university, which helped the university grow at all levels. The meeting concluded by discussing the university’s ranking locally, regionally and globally and the efforts aimed at promoting its ranking.
