DUBAI: A taxi driver sped off with an elderly woman’s purse, removed Dhs2,000, shred her valuable cards and buried them in a sandy area, a jury heard on Thursday.

At around 10am on Sept.21, the 65-year-old Emirati housewife contacted a taxi corporation for a taxi to take her to a location in Rashidiyah. The Asian cabbie, 26, arrived and transported her.

On the way back home, she took the front passenger seat and placed her purse beside the suspect. Upon entering the house, she realised  that she had forgotten the purse on the seat. She hurried back to the point where she disembarked from and tried trying to flag him down.

He sped away.  She contacted him. He claimed he had not seen the purse. She told him that she would notify the police. He told her to go on if she wanted. The Rashidiyah Police Station summoned him.

He maintained his claim. However, during intensified interrogations he directed cops to a trash container in Mirdif where he tossed the wallet and a sandy area in Al Mizhar where he buried the torn cards. He skipped the Criminal Court’s questioning. Prosecutors have demanded the toughest penalty. Hearing continues on Nov.20.
