MANILA: Despite a significant drop in the annual population growth rate, about 1.8 million more Filipinos are projected to be born, raising the total population to 106.4 million by the end of this year.

“Based on the population projection, the Philippine population will increase by 1.8 million at the end of 2018, growing at a rate of 1.69 per cent. That means we will be adding 4,965 Filipinos per day, or 206 every hour in 2018,” Juan Antonio Perez, the head of the Commission on Population (Popcom) reported.

Perez pointed out that the 1.69 per cent drop in annual population growth rate represented a significant reduction from the more than two per cent earlier recorded since the country implemented its family planning programme.

But despite the reduction, Perez noted that the country’s population remained the 13th largest worldwide and the second biggest in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) after Laos.

Aside from the Philippines and Laos, the other Asean members include Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar, which reported significant drops in their annual population growth rates.

When President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte took over Malacanang Palace in June 2016, he announced that one of his top 10 priorities was the implementation of the birth control law to enable the government to cope with the basic needs of a galloping population like food, housing, health and education.
