DUBAI: The UAE’s Sheikha Saeed clinched three gold medals in the 2004 B category to emerge victorious at the Dubai International Rhythmic Gymnastics DuGym Cup.

Sheikha Saeed displayed undisputed talent with both the Ball and Hoop apparatus in the competition, which had 21 countries, 44 clubs and more than 260 gymnasts competing for the much coveted DuGym Cup.

The awe in the face of judges and other gymnasts were alike while Sheikha Saeed performed her routines with ease and splendour.

DuGym Cup had a world-renowned panel of judges including Noha Abou Shabana, the Vice President of FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics (FIG - International Gymnastics Federation / Federation Internationale de Gymnastique) and many other renowned gymnastic coaches from around the world.

The DuGym Cup judging panel evaluated the performance of the gymnasts based on the FIG code of conduct and difficulty levels, which is the highest standard set in the Rhythmic Gymnastics world.

The special attendees of the DuGym Cup included Rio 2016 Olympic Bronze Medallist Anna Rizatdinova from Ukraine, world-class gymnasts Dora Vass from Hungary and Maria Mateva from Bulgarian.

Sheikha Saeed has also performed along with Anna, Dora and Maria during the gala event, which she considers a great experience.

Sheikha Saeed admits that the sport requires many sacrifices and the success that she has achieved is a result of hard work of about 15-20 hours of training a week.

Sheikha Saeed is the first Emirati Rhythmic Gymnast to attain the glory at the international level when she represented the UAE at the International Rhythmic Gymnastics competition held in the USA in December 2014 and now her dream is to represent the country in the Olympics.

Country’s pride

Sheikha Saeed’s achievement is something that the whole country can be proud of, stated the director and head coach of DuGym Rhythmic Gymnastics, Angel Ebru Ilgaz.

A former FIG international judge and World University Games judge, Angel was the first person to introduce the Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in the UAE in 2006.

She said: “Rhythmic Gymnastics was never a widespread sport in the country and at the initial stage my club had only five girls and now it has grown to the size of 300 gymnasts.

“Sheikha Saeed is very well-talented, a fast learner and has natural skills in the sport. She did her first split at the age of 5 and her continual efforts are paying back now as gold medals.”

Dubai hosted the first ever International Rhythmic Gymnastics championship in the country with the support of the Dubai Sports Council.
