‘Dr Abdullah taught me Journalism’
January 30, 2018

Since childhood I asked my father about Dr. Abdullah and his brother Taryam Omran Taryam whenever I came across their photos in the media. “Both will be remembered by history,” he stressed.

He had befriended them while they were pursuing studies in Kuwait. He always talked about them. I experienced a growing interest in journalism.

I started reading more and more newspapers and books. My father detected the growing passion. Upon the publication of Al Khaleej newspaper he escorted me to Dar Al Khaleej.

We entered the office of the late Dr Abdullah and Taryam Omran Taryam who accorded us a warm welcome.

The welcome, for me, was the first encouragement dose I received in the field of journalism. I will never forget that meeting. This is because –after the God’s grace- the meeting inside that particular office had a great influence on the march of my journalistic life from then on. I am what I am thanks to their encouragement.

I remember meeting Dr Abdullah whenever I visited Dar Al Khaleej. He would give me directives and walk me from office to office so I could get acquainted with the field, until I started writing about schools.

Once in summer, he granted me an opportunity to write about social crises. From there I moved to the cultural section. Once I travelled with him to Kuwait and visited its Ministry of Education.

Upon our return he allocated for me a full page to write about the visit to Kuwait. I will never forget such a great encouragement. As my father put it, “Both will be remembered by history.”
