International passengers grow at Calicut airport

KOZHIKODE: Calicut International Airport witnessed a rise in number of international passengers during half year ending 30 September, according to official air traffic statistics. Compared to previous years, there is a 22.49 per cent increase in the number of international passengers using Calicut airport.

Calicut occupies 7th in national level and 2nd in state in the number of the international passengers. Among the three airports in the state, Calicut reached second, while Kochi and Trivandrum held first and third positions respectively. At the national level Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is placed at 4th position.

The statistics of international passengers were prepared by the Air Traffic Control unit. Delhi international airport tops the list at national level with more than eight million passengers. According to passenger traffic, eight of the first 12 airports in the country are in South India. Apart from Calicut, Cochin and Trivandrum, Chennai, Mangalore, Hyderabad, Mangalore and Tiruchirappalli also figure in the list.

Calicut airport also registered an all-time record in the number of domestic passengers as well.

During the last fiscal, passenger traffic from three airports in the state hit 15 million mark. Among the three, Cochin airport recorded the highest growth, with a passenger traffic of 8.94 million during 2016-2017, as compared to 7.75 million during the previous year. There was an increase of 7.7 per cent in number of international travellers and 26 per cent in domestic passenger traffic. International passengers accounted for about 60 per cent of the total figure. Twenty four airlines, both national and international operate from Cochin airport.

At Calicut airport, total number of travellers last year was 2.4 million, including 2 million foreign travellers and 400,000 domestic passengers, during 2016-2017. A year ago, the total numbers were 2.3 million, comprising 1,939,130 international and 366,696 domestic passengers. The number of flight services had increased to 36 from 26.

Trivandrum International Airport recorded a growth of 12.4 per cent in passenger traffic during the last fiscal. International passengers hit a figure of 1.58 million, while domestic travellers accounted for 230,000. In the 2015-2016 period, the airport received 3.417 million passengers including 2.25 million international travellers and 1.19 million domestic passengers.
