SHARJAH: Surya Bala, a quilling enthusiast, displayed the largest Handmade paper quilled UAE flag on Monday to the public at Indian Association of Sharjah, as part of national day celebrations.

The 345 Sq Ft (32 Sq m) hand-made flag was made up of 5mm thick 100,000 coloured strips of paper with four kilogrammes of glue and weighs more than 50Kg. Surya spent over 2,000 hours on the project by working for more than 12 months. She is gunning for the Guinness record keeping the fingers crossed. The flag is the first of its kind in the UAE made using the tiny strips of paper.

The surveys were taken which were witnessed by officials from Indian consulate, Sharjah Police and Sharjah Municipality. These evidences along with the complete videos shall be submitted to the Guinness record as a part of procedure. There were more than 1000 visitors at the venue to witness the flag.

When Surya Bala moved to the UAE from India in 2016, she felt warmly welcomed in to the community, and decided to show her appreciation by making the largest paper-quilled UAE flag.

The 26-year-old from India, who is a civil engineer at Larsen and Toubro in Sharjah, said she was “amazed” at how the UAE is hosting a diversity of nationalities and “extending its love and peace to the people”. Soon after her arrival, Bala chose to create an artistic master piece and what can potentially be the largest quilled piece in the world — to show her gratitude to the UAE.

“I dedicate this Handmade quilled flag to the people of this nation because I feel extremely lucky and fortunate to be here”.

Taking up paper quilling around six years ago, Bala often made smaller projects and was pleasantly surprised to receive positive feedback from family and friends.

She is displaying the flag as an attempt to Guinness World Records for which she will submit all the evidences. The current world record is of a paper-quilled mosaic measuring 5mx5m.

Bala wants the government organisations to come forward, preserve and display this unique master piece to public in a suitable place.
