WE surely belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. Today, we remember Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam (May his soul rest in peace), an Emirati loyal son, statesman and a renowned media icon. He was an influential figure, who contributed greatly to his country as a minister, decision-maker, scholar, philanthropist, analyst and investor. His ambition, dedication and values remain a source of inspiration, which encourages us all to uphold his legacy and keep striving for excellence and progress. A cross-section of business heavyweights and scholars, speaking to Inayat-ur-Rahman of The Gulf Today, paid rich tributes and prayed for the departed soul of the legendary statesman

Majid Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry: The late Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam will forever be remembered for the great contribution he made to the UAE’s development and progress. As one of the UAE’s most distinguished and respected statesmen, he made his mark on so many segments of our society, through his leadership roles in government, media and education. As we mark five years of his passing, we honour his memory and legacy that will live on for generations to come.

Dr Khalid Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Media City (Shams): Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam was a national icon and one of the UAE’s most respected sons, statesmen and journalists. He always promoted the virtues of reason and dialogue through his publications in the interests of upholding the truth, and he dedicated his life to uplifting the community.

He was a man of vision who worked tirelessly and steadfastly to develop the nation through journalism.

We salute his efforts in the fields of culture and the media. He lives on in our hearts. I have always felt that The Gulf Today, which Dr Abdullah co- founded, is one of the most readable papers in the region. May Allah grant his soul eternal peace and give strength to the members of his immediate family, who move forward with their late father’s legacy. (Ameen)

Iqbal Dawood, President, Pakistan Business Council Dubai: Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam will always be remembered for playing a fundamental role in paving the way for many media establishments locally and regionally.

His passion for development of his country, endurance in leading the paths for the Arab media and his value for words was exemplary and had a resounding effect on people

He was one of the UAE’s cultural figures, a man with unsurpassed intelligence and a beautiful heart – whose name, work and accomplishments will live forever in the hearts and minds of generations to come.

He founded and successfully led the Dar Al Khaleej publishing house and acquired a forefront in the media landscape in the Mena region with an elite of top tier publications in Arabic and English. His publications until today apply rigid editorial standards, making them stand out significantly in the masses.

Those who personally knew the late Dr Abdullah Taryam will understand that he was a genial person with a dynamic personality. My thoughts and prayers are with the Taryam family, may Allah rest his soul in eternal peace. Ameen

We are proud of him who was a great statesman who served his country in many roles like Minister of Justice and Education. He was a  humble man with a noble background who sought the best for mankind. His legacy will live forever in the minds of people in the UAE.

CA Mahmood Bangara, Chairman, ICAI Dubai:
I offer my deepest condolences on the death anniversary of Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam, Co-founder of Dar Al Khaleej, former Minister of Education, and Minister of Justice. One of the pioneers of the powerful national press that we rely on today.  Dr Abdullah was a visionary that everyone should learn from. A catalyst in laying the foundation of the nation, he played an eminent role in the unification of the UAE, and dedicated his life to the Federation. His loyalty and his strong belief in the potential of the nation will be remembered forever, and the generations to come will take his legacy forward by achieving the milestones he foresaw. Dr Abdullah was a kind soul who believed in giving back and The Taryam Omran Centre for Media Training and Development that he established to provide free training to Emirati mediapersons continues to educate many in the industry and enrich the lives of media people. His loss is irreplaceable but his causes will continue to inspire for ever.

Khalid Hussain Chaudhry,  President, Pakistan Social Centre Sharjah:
My heart grieves over the loss of a legendary statesman. The late Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam was a great leader and a game-changer for many of us. He was a man of vision who worked tirelessly with exemplary steadfastness for the social development of the nation through journalism.

Losing him has been a great loss for the UAE that cannot be compensated for. He thoroughly loved Pakistanis. May Almighty Allah rest his soul in peace. (Ameen)

Mian Munir Hans, Chairman, Hans Global Group:
Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam was an unmatched statesman, who played a crucial role in establishing the United Arab Emirates which will be remembered by everyone for years to come.  His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, mourned the death of Dr Abdullah. Sheikh Mohammed stated that he lost a dear brother, a loyal friend, known for good conduct, courage, clarity of opinion, intention and sense of belonging and loyalty to his homeland and leadership. This statement speaks volumes about the personality of Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam. He will always live in our fond memories. May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace and grant him the highest place in Jannat-ul-Ferdos (Ameen).

Neha Kaul, CEO, Your Wordsmiths: When someone is a true visionary and works all his life changing the course of history by inventing, discovering or implementing things that can improve people’s lives, the memories, goodwill and teachings of that leader become immortal. The late Taryam Omran was one such leader whose actions positively influenced others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. As a pioneer of the national press, he established the first private newspaper in the country – Al Khaleej. This has had a deep impact on shaping the face of modern media in the UAE. But his spirit of setting new benchmarks while giving back to society led him to set up the Taryam Omran Centre for Media Training and Development, which provides free training to Emirati media.

The UAE today is a beacon of hope and tolerance balanced with innovation and inclusive progress for all. And it is through the contribution of intellectuals and stalwarts like Dr Taryam that the UAE has achieved its global positioning. A strong supporter of the foundation of the Federation, Dr Taryam played a crucial role in the inception of the ‘UAE’ as the world knows it today. He was a catalyst for the spirit of the union, proud of its accomplishments and actively worked towards the convergence. Owing to his lifetime of commitment to the progressive good of the nation, Dr Taryam holds a very special position among the veterans in the UAE.

A nation is made up of the courage, commitment, and loyalty of its people. Dr Taryam was known to possess these qualities in good measure. In fact, his essence as a good human being, and an able, knowledgeable leader was evident in the statement made on his demise by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who recalled him as an ‘Emirati loyal son, statesman, renowned mediaperson and a courageous, loyal friend and brother’.

When your actions continue to impact lives far beyond your mortal life, it is a true testament to a life well lived. Paying tribute to Dr Taryam on his fifth death anniversary, I wish the nation more leaders like him to continue to propel the UAE towards its goals of building innovative, inclusive, happy societies. Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed.
