Career changers

Back in 2012 Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif starred in Ek Tha Tiger opposite Salman Khan. Fast forward five years to the sequel Tiger Zinda Hai, which many believe has the potential to bring back Katrina’s career to an even keel. This week we look at the professional choices of one of Bollywood’s highest-paid actresses who has relied heavily on blockbusters to build her career.

Earlier this year Katrina starred in director Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos alongside Ranbir Kapoor. The mystery comedy adventure movie centres around a teenage detective in search of his missing father. Unfortunately the film failed to connect with audiences and ended up bombing at the box office. Of course the poorly received movie was a major setback to Katrina’s career.

An interesting point about Katrina’s career is that most of her movie roles tend to be opposite the three Bollywood Khans, Salman, Shahrukh and Aamir. When Katrina does star alongside any of the industry’s younger actors, the movies tend to not do well.

Back in 2016 Katrina featured in Fitoor, a reworking of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. The movie was set in Kashmir and co-starred Aditya Roy Kapoor. The romantic drama received mixed reviews from critics and was unsuccessful at the box office.

As well as Tiger Zinda Hai, Katrina has two major movies coming out in 2018 both of which are expected to be huge hits. Will they be enough to revive Katrina’s career and help her keep up with the younger actresses who are starting to eclipse her? Only time will tell.
