Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were recently announced and thankfully this year the race issue seems to have been put to bed. The movie industry’s most awaited event of the year will see old and new Hollywood come together to celebrate the best that the industry has to offer.

Celebrating her 21st Academy Award nomination is the legendary actress Meryl Streep. This time around she is in contention for the Best Actress award for her role in Steven Spielberg’s The Post. The political thriller centres around the first female publisher, played by Streep, of a major American newspaper and the pressures that come along with the role. If Meryl does win she will be taking home the fourth Oscar of her career.

From a veteran to a newbie, Australian actress Margot Robbie has been nominated for her first Academy Award for her role as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya. The biographical comedy follows the life of Harding and her connection to the 1994 attack on her skating rival Nancy Kerrigan. Margot spent months preparing for the role and learning how to figure skate as well as undergoing drastic physical transformations to play the athlete.

In the Best Actor category we have the likes of Denzel Washington for his role in the legal drama Roman J. Israel, Esq., Daniel Day Lewis for his role in Phantom Thread and Timothee Chalamet for his role in Call Me by Your Name. Interestingly, Chalamet is the first 1990s born actor to receive a nomination and if he does win, he will be the youngest actor (male) to win an Oscar.
