A lot of room for change

While the dynamics are slowly but surely changing for women behind the camera, the ladies on screen are facing a far tougher battle. This week we are taking a look at how actresses are still being stereotyped with the roles they play as well as examining some of the ways to move forward from this problem.

A study conducted last year showed that females accounted for just 43 per cent of speaking roles last season. This is quite shocking considering the fact that women watch more TV on a daily basis compared to men. From those 43 per cent, an actress will usually be playing a victim or a hopeless romantic.

This is the case with seemingly formidable actresses Kerry Washington and Nicole Kidman. Both women have a serious CV of movies and shows behind them but will always end up playing a weaker role on TV.

Producer Shonda Rhimes has played a huge part in increasing the number of women directors in the TV world. Last year saw the rise of ladies behind the camera with 21 per cent of episodes being directed by women. However, when it comes to the characters on her shows, Rhimes has yet to break away from the typical female stereotype roles. Her characters, like Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo on the hit series Grey’s Anatomy, evolve in very unrealistic ways on her shows. Rhimes is fully aware of this fact and does not care that her characters’ antics would never happen in an actual work place.
