SAO POULO: Brazilian television network Globo suspended veteran journalist and presenter William Waack over racist comments made in video footage published on social media on Wednesday.

The network confirmed Waack, 65, has been temporarily suspended “until the situation is clarified.”

The video, circulated online on Wednesday, was taken in Washington during the 2016 US presidential election.

In the film, Waack is seen preparing to interview Wilson Center Brazil Institute director Paulo Sotero, when a vehicle passes loudly honking its horn.

The award-winning presenter, formerly a correspondent in Europe and the Middle East, then launches into a tirade of insults, concluding, “I’m sure it’s a black thing.”

“Globo fundamentally opposes racism in all forms,” the network said in a statement released hours after the footage went viral.

Waack has not commented on the matter, but Globo said the journalist “claims he does not remember what he said, because the audio is not clear, but he sincerely asks for forgiveness from those offended by the situation.”

Earlier this year, Globo also suspended a famous soap opera actor after he was accused of sexual assault.
