Abu Dhabi: The euro 12,000 Z7 Speed Stakes over two phases was claimed in dramatic fashion by Jordanian rider, Nasouh Kayali at the Al Shira’aa International Horse Show on Thursday.

Kayali was the first of two Jordanians to win big at the show with compatriot, Ibrahim Hani Bisharat claiming the Mother of The Nation International qualifier.

The rules of a two-phase competition require that riders must jump the first phase clear before being allowed to attempt the remaining fences against the clock. A rider that has faults over the first phase fences is not allowed to continue.

The thirty-third rider to go, Saudi Arabia’s Waled Alghadi had been the leader for an hour as rider after rider failed to better his second-phase time of 28.56sec.

Abdullah Sharbatly and Quinlan, his second horse of the competition had come close to Alghadi’s time after flying round in 28.71sec and four riders later, Kayali entered the arena.

This is only his second show with new mare, Adette, but it was impossible to tell from their performance. The pair made the jump off phase looks effortless and luck was on their side when they rattled the last fence but survived to stop the clock at 27.05secs and claim victory.

“It was a very difficult class with so many entries,” said Kayali. “I had to be really quick and I’m hoping that I can continue these good results for the rest of the season.

“This was my first year competing at the Al Shiraa International Horse Show. The last time I came to the UAE was almost six years ago so I am really happy to see how the sport has developed and how everything has evolved and hopefully I’ll come back next year.”

Kayali said he was very pleased to have competed against some of the biggest names in showjumping.

“I was hearing from everyone that Al Shira’aa was the best venue to compete. When I came here and saw how it is, it is actually one of the best venues and with some of the best competition we have had so far, with so many big names and so many good horses, it’s one of the best venues I have been to.”

Jordan also fared well in the final class of the day, the euro 25,000Mother of The Nation Presents International Qualifier at 150cm.

Bisharat and King of Diamonds were the first to go and set a standard that the rest of nine-strong jump off field failed to beat. A minimum of 22 riders from the starting field of 36 are to go through to the Longines Al Shira’aa Grand Prix on Saturday.

“It was a very difficult course and I am very happy to win,” he said. “This is quite a young horse so it was actually a benefit for us to go in early and put pressure on the rest of the field with our time.”
