DUBAI: Music in the eyes of South Koreans takes centre stage at the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai evening of Sept. 6, Thursday when the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea hosts a cultural show featuring the internationally-acclaimed SE:UM.

The seven-year-old 12-man group consists of one female singer, Yunhee Choi and 11 instrumentalists.

They are adept in translating traditional Korean music and Western jazz into innovative ensembles, with the use of traditional musical instruments, unique to South Korea, such as the gayageum and the jang-gu, alongside the contrabass of the violin family as well as the saxophone, trumpet and flugelhorn of the wind family.

Gayageum consists of 12 to 21 strings and similar to the zither. Jang-gu is the slim-waist drum.

It will be the second international performance of the SE:UM in the UAE as they were highlighted at the UAE Korea Festival in Abu Dhabi in 2016.

Other recitals were held at the 2018 Azerbaijan 100-Year Founding Anniversary, 2018 Pyeongchang Cultural Olympic, 2017 Exciting Arts Tour in Korea, 2017 Korean Breath, and 2016 Washington, D.C. Jazz Festival.
