University awards honorary PhD to Amal Al Qubaisi

ABU DHABI: The British University of Sheffield, has awarded Dr Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), an honorary doctorate in recognition of her work in the political, educational, cultural, academic and social fields.

Al Qubaisi, a graduate of the Sheffield University, was honoured by the university as the first woman to head a parliamentary institution in the Arab world and the Middle East, and her active role in adoption of Arab and international humanitarian issues as well as her role in activating parliamentary diplomacy.

She was honoured at a grand ceremony held at the university in the presence of Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, deans of faculties, teaching staff, the graduates of the university in a number of disciplines, including architecture.

Lady Justice Rafferty, Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said, “The University of Sheffield is proud of Dr Al Qubaisi as one of its graduates who obtained PhD in Architecture,” and noted that “her huge achievements, including her post as the FNC speaker, make us all proud.”

Speaking on behalf of the university, she said, “This deserved honour is granted to her in light of achievements and advancement of parliamentary, social and cultural issues with global and humanitarian dimensions to contribute towards developing the community, empowering youth and women as well as protecting human heritage.”
