New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it will extend up to March 31, 2018 the deadline set for mandatory linking of the Aadhaar card with various schemes, including bank accounts.

However, the last date for linking Aadhaar to mobile phone services remains as Feb.6, 2018.

Attorney General KK Venugopal pointed out that this date is in pursuance of a judicial order.

A three-judge bench said a Constitution bench will be formed next week to hear the interim pleas seeking a stay on Centre’s move to link Aadhaar with various government schemes and services.

Venugopal told the apex court that a Data Protection Committee led by Justice Sri Krishna will submit its final report to the government by February next year.

The March 31, 2018 extension is only for those who still do not have an Aadhaar card.

The court had made it clear on Nov.26 that it would hear petitions against Aadhar after its constitution bench completes hearing on a dispute between Delhi and the Centre. Chief Justice Deepak Misra had in October said that a constitution bench would be constituted and Aadhaar-related matters would come up for hearing before it.

The lawyer for the petitioners told the judges that the central government should give an undertaking that no coercive steps would be taken against those fail to link their Aadhaar with various services.

Recently, a nine-judge constitution bench of the apex court had held that Right to Privacy was a Fundamental Right under the Constitution.

Several petitioners challenging the validity of Aadhaar had claimed it violated privacy rights.

The present deadline for the banks to link the account of the customer with their Aadhaar is Dec.31, 2017. Aadhaar centres have been opened in banks, which makes it easy for the customers. Aadhaar card can be linked, with the customers’ mobile banking to the bank accounts.

Taxpayers were supposed to link their Aadhaar number with the PAN card before Aug.31, failing which their income tax return was not to be processed. However, later the tax department extended the deadline by four months.
