DUBAI: The opening heat of the Majid Cup 60ft traditional dhow sailing race will be held on Saturday.
Organisers are expecting more than 50 dhows to confirm their participation for the race series that culminates with the annual Sir Bu Naair to Dubai race.
In a breakaway from normal competition, organisers Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) have decided to have the race starting from Moon Island and heading straight to the finish line at the Burj Al Arab.
With the first heat taking place on Nov.24, the second heat will be held in February and the concluding heat will be the Sir Bu Naair to Dubai race in May.
Competitors for the opening round are required to assemble with their boats at the Moon Island that is situated roughly midway between Dubai and Sir Bu Naair, at 9:30 am on Saturday so that the race starts at 11 am.
The prize-giving will be held immediately after the race at the DIMC followed by technical scrutineering for the top five finishers.
