DUBAI: A taxi driver who dug teeth into a female passenger’s shoulder and robbed her skipped the court questioning on Sunday.

The Asian driver, 30, picked up a Russian complainant and her female friend to transport them to their residence but started driving around to deliberately increase the taxi fare. The friend experienced nausea and later threw up.

He disputed with them and grabbed the complainant’s Dhs3,000 iPhone. When she tried to get back the mobile phone he bit her and pushed her on the ground before speeding off. They reported him to Al Barsha Police Station.

The bite injury on Aug.11 took days to heal. Prosecutors refered him to the Criminal Court demanding the toughest punishment applicable for the brutal theft. He skipped the court questioning. The court set Feb.27 for its decision.

In police records, the complainant said they boarded the taxi at a bank on Sheikh Zayed Road and asked the driver to take them to Tecom area. He started driving around Dubai sparking a heated argument between him and them.

“He pulled over in Al Barsha and got my friend out. I told him to call the police to settle the dispute. He instead came from behind me and snatched my phone. I tried to stop him but he bit my shoulder and sped away.”

An Emirati sergeant said the complainant told him the defendant did not drive straight to their destination in Tecom but rather drove through various streets to prolong the distance and accumulate a greater taxi fare.

He branched off from Sheikh Zayed Road, went to Al Satwa and drove around then returned to Sheikh Zayed Road and drove until Sport City area. He later took off towards Al Barsha-South area not until her friend threw up in the taxi. The defendant got disappointed and disputed with them.

He kicked them out of the taxi and robbed the complainant. The fare was supposed to be Dhs52 but by the time he stopped the meter in Umm Suqeim it was reading Dhs124. The complainant recognised him during an identity parade in which 45 taxi drivers were presented before her.
