DUBAI: Antinarcotics personnel netted members of three international drug smuggling gangs with 52kg of heroin, cocaine and hashish, Dubai Police senior officers announced on Tuesday.

The Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief, Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, praised the efforts of the Antinarcotics Department teams and recognised their vigilance, precision in planning and advanced performance.

He stressed the significance of the operations some of which lasted several months. “The personnel’s sincere efforts yielded in the arrest of criminal cells targeting members of society, especially the youth,” he said.

“The positive results reaffirm UAE’s determination to continue with the approach put forward by HH General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, to combat the narcotics scourge.”

Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Criminal Investigation, explained that antinarcotics teams discovered a gang of Asian nationals trying to bring drugs from their homeland to Dubai.

They were transporting the contraband on a launch. The teams followed all the gang members’ movements and managed to apprehend them red-handed in Al Qusais and Dubai Marina with 14.400 kilogrammes of heroin in total.

Officers arrested a GCC, an Asian and an African national in a shopping mall receiving proceeds of “the toxins” they had brought in with the intention of promoting and hawking them among the youth. Police seized 24.400kg of hashish.

“In the third important operation,” Maj. Gen. Al Mansouri explained, “a gang’s criminal activities spanned a wide geographical area from South America to Asia and Africa. The gang exploited shipping lines.”

The department, in cooperation and coordination with Dubai Customs, was alerted that a suspicious container arrived at a Dubai port. Arab and African nationals were trying to clear it and export it to an Arab African country.

There were more than 13kg of cocaine inside packaging materials. The shipment was disguised as one of oil paints. Police nabbed four gang members in the UAE and two at the Dubai International Airport upon arrival.

For his part, the Dubai Police Antinarcotics Department Director, Brigadier Eid Mohamed Thani Hareb, underlined, “The three operations dealt a severe and painful blow to drug dealers and smugglers.”

He commended the efforts of antinarcotics entities and their level of coordination in monitoring, investigation and exchange of information.
He attributed the success to vigilance of anti-narcotics officers, accuracy of security information, and effective cooperation and coordination between the Dubai Police and Dubai Customs.
