Sharjah a major destination for culture, heritage

SHARJAH: Manal Ataya, Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA),took part in a panel discussion at the Global Cultural District Network (GCDN) conference on efforts to preserve and promote art, culture and history across the UAE.

 The two day conference chaired by Adrian Ellis  was held on Tuesday at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, the Director General spoke about the various projects being led by the Sharjah Museums Authority to continue to develop the emirate’s position as a major destination for heritage and culture.

 Joining the Director General on the panel, moderated by Antonia Carver, were Dr. Zaki Nusseibeh, Minister of State, UAE Ministry of Presidential Affairs, Vilma Jurkute, Director,Alserkal Avenue and Manuel Rabaté, Director, Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Addressing the panel and the audience of GCDN members, Ms Ataya spoke at length about Sharjah’s Heart of Sharjah cultural district and the 8 museums managed by SMA in the area. Furthermore she announced he recently reopened Bait Al Naboodah museum in the Heart of Sharjah by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.

The Heart of Sharjah expansion project to be completed in 2025 is being overseen by Shurooq Investment and Development Authority whose responsibilities include facilitating the social, cultural, environmental and economic development of Sharjah.

 International members of the GCDN are scheduled to visit Sharjah on Wednesday to take part in a guided tour of the Sharjah Art Museum, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, and Bait Al Naboodah.

 The GCDN a network of global centers of arts and culture. It was established to foster cooperation and knowledge-sharing among entities responsible for conceiving, funding, creating and operating cultural and creative districts around the world.
