Indian scholar Cherusseri Zainuddin Musliar dies

KOZHIKODE: Noted Islamic scholar and general secretary of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, Cherusseri Zainuddin Musliar, 78, passed away at private hospital on Thursday morning. He was admitted to the hospital a month before with neurological ailments and the end came at 6.20am.

He took over the reigns of the organisation in 1996 when his predecessor EK Aboobacker Musliar died. He served as the general secretary of Samastha till date.

His mortal remains were shifted to his house at Morayur near Kondotty in Malappuram district around 12.30. Funeral took place at Darul Huda Islamic University (DHIU) at Chemmad in the presence of thousands of followers, religious, political and cultural leaders and ordinary people from all walks of life.

He was born in 1937 to Cherusseri Ahamed Musliar and Pathummunni. Zainuddin Musliar started religious teaching at the age of 22.

He had worked as Mudarris (religious teacher) at Kodangad, Kondotty, Malappuram for eighteen years. He also worked as Mudarris at Chemmad Juma Masjid for several years.

He served as the Pro chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University, Chemmad in Malappuram district. He was Quazi of hundreds of Mahals in different parts of the state.

He is Qatheeb (Juma prayer Imam) at Qaziyarakam Juma Masjid, Kondotty.

He had also served as principal of Darul Huda, ever since its inception in 1986. He was the principal of Chemmad Darul Huda Islamic Academy and also a member of Samastha Mushavara and Fatwa committees.

His role in transforming the DHIU as a principal source of quality religious learning in the country has been widely recognised.

He is survived by wives Bangalath Mariyumma, Khadeeja and sons Rafeeq and Mohammed Sadiq, daughters Fathima and Raihanath.

He could not attend the recently concluded annual meet of Samastha at Alappuzha as he was admitted to the hospital.

The body was kept at Darul Huda Islamic University at Chemmad at 12.30 for public to pay homage. The funeral took place at the University around 4.30pm.
