ABU DHABI: President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered urgent delivery of relief to shelter displaced people in the areas of Pakistan hit by floods.
The relief material to be dispatched include blankets, tents, medical items and foodstuff.
The death toll from three days of flooding in Pakistan reached at least 430 on Friday, as rains bloated rivers, submerged villages, and triggered landslides.
According to the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 500,000 people have been affected by the floods which devastated several areas of Pakistan.
OCHA described the floods as worst in the country since 1929.
The highway connecting Peshawar to the federal capital, Islamabad, was shut down. Swat and Shangla were also cut off from the rest of country.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain told a news conference at least 600,000 people have been affected and the number was likely to go up as water levels continue to rise in rivers in Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsada.
At least 60 bridges were destroyed, Hussain said.
In Azad Kashmir, at least 22 people were confirmed dead as of Thursday evening, the area’s Prime Minister, Sardar Attique Khan, told reporters.
