DUBAI: A visitor and his peer who mugged a bank client and decamped with Dhs164,650 cash and a Dhs6,904 cheque, will spend one year behind bars.

The Colombian visitor, 36, assaulted the Lebanese businessman, 33, and grabbed his handbag opposite a bank in Al Quoz at around 11.30am on Jan.23 as the peer, 31, watched the situation from inside a getaway car.

The businessman narrated that he drove to the bank to deposit the cash and cheque of his employer’s company. He left his car at a parking lot opposite the bank, stepped out and walked towards the bank.

“I was about to reach the bank’s main entrance when the visitor showed up and said something that I could not hear. I turned and asked him in English what he had said. He suddenly jumped to snatch the bag.

“I held it firmly and pulled it towards me as he kept pulling it strongly. I held onto the bag firmly as he continued pulling it until I felt severe pain in my shoulder. He finally grabbed it from me and I fell on the floor.

“He fled. I remained on the ground shouting for help, but to no avail. I contacted the police.”  A week later, police summoned him to an identity parade where he recognised the visitor.

Police reviewed surveillance camera footage at the bank and an adjacent petrol station. Both men appeared waiting at the petrol station. The visitor appeared stalking the victim before grabbing the bag from him. At around 7pm on Jan.31, a source alerted investigators that the two suspects were inside the car in Bur Dubai. Police patrols surrounded them. They resisted arrest.

The visitor was seized with Dhs2,040 and his peer with Dhs1,080. They will be deported after the jail term, the Criminal Court ruled.
