DUBAI: A driver implicated in knocking a deliveryman’s speeding vehicle, spraying him with chilli and snatching Dhs293, 539 must see out his three-year-jail term plus deportation.

The Asian driver, 30, with the help of fugitive accomplices rammed a getaway car into a courier company employee’s vehicle at a junction in Jebel Ali on Jul.22 last year, prosecution records read.

He stepped out of the car and started apologising to the employee to distract him while gang members opened his vehicle’s door, removed the cash, placed it in another getaway car and sped away.

He confessed at the Dubai Criminal Court on Sept.12. The court sentenced him to three years behind bars to be followed by deportation. He appealed for leniency. The Appeals Court has rejected his plea.

In Jebel Ali Police Station records, the Nepalese employee, 44, had been commissioned by his boss to deliver the cash from the company’s shopping store in Abu Dhabi to the headquarters in Jebel Ali.

The gang tailed him from Abu Dhabi. He tried to stop them from stealing the cash. They punched him and sprayed his eyes with chilli. He explained, “I was driving when a car hit my vehicle from the left side.

“I held the wheel firmly, controlled the vehicle and pulled over. I was talking to its driver when another car arrived. Its occupants beat me up, sprayed me with chilli and sped off with the bag of money.”

The driver confessed before police and prosecutors and revealed that a fugitive mastermind who was aware of the employee’s movements summoned them for a meeting inside a flat in Abu Dhabi.

“I was driving at around 70 km/h when a gang member advised me to knock the vehicle on our right side. I did so then stepped out, apologised to the employee and engaged him a discussion to distract him.

“Three accomplices opened its door. He tried to stop them. They sprayed him with chilli. We fled to Abu Dhabi. I got a Dhs10, 000 cut and sent it to my homeland.”  The company’s Jordanian manager said, “Some of the money belonged our clients.”
