DUBAI: In the presence of UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Arab Media Forum paid glowing tributes to the late chairman of Dar Al Khaleej for Press, Printing and Publishing, Sharjah, Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam, whose sudden death earlier this year shocked the world of Arab media.

Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam, launched Al Khaleej — the first newspaper in the UAE, along with his brother, the late Taryam Omran Taryam.

Later, they established the Dar Al Khaleej for Press, Printing and Publishing, Sharjah, and launched the first English language daily newspaper from Sharjah, The Gulf Today.

The group also publishes a political weekly in Arabic —Al Shorouq, a family magazine in Arabic — Kul Al Usra, a weekly financial magazine Al Eqtisadi and a magazine for children Al Azkiya.

A documentary shown at the closing ceremony of the annual gathering of intellectuals from across the world highlighted Dr Abdullah Taryam’s lifelong service to Arab media.

A towering media personality in the region, he used the Dar Al Khaleej publications to highlight issues of concern to Arabs in the Middle East and other parts of the world.

His immense contribution to journalism was recognised at the Arab Journalist Award 2009 when Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum honoured him as Media Personality of the Year.
