The darker side

The 75th annual Golden Globe Awards took on a much more serious tone this year. Showing solidarity with the Time’s Up campaign, a vast majority of actresses, as well as many actors, dressed in black in protest of the sexual harassment scandals which have engulfed Hollywood over the last few months.

A-lister Meryl Streep was one of the first actresses to make her way down the red carpet. Meryl brought domestic violence advocate Ai-jen Poo as her guest, a theme we saw with several other actresses who chose to bring activists as their dates. Speaking to reporters, Meryl explained how she was feeling emboldened in that moment and how they wanted to stand together in a “thick black line” against the power imbalance which leads to sexual abuse.

In spite of the sea of black which flowed over the red carpet, the awards still oozed glitz and glam. Girls actress Allison Williams added a pop of colour to her shimmery black Armani Prive column dress in the form of an orange and silver bodice. Singer Kelly Clarkson had gold on the neck and one sleeve of her black Christian Siriano gown. I, Tonya star Margot Robbie brought some sparkle to her black custom Gucci dress with a crystal bow surrounded by three-dimensional floral embroideries.

On another serious note, turn to our Counter-point pages to read about Ahed Tamimi, the 16-year-old Palestinian girl who was arrested during a pre-dawn raid on her house in the village of Nabi Saleh on Dec. 19 for assaulting an Israeli soldier. Ahed has become known as the face of resistance and has highlighted the plight of the terror faced by children growing up under Israeli occupation.
