DUBAI: An unemployed man suspected to have teamed up with a gang to batter and rob a compatriot following business disputes has been detained, a court gathering heard on Thursday.

The unemployed Chinese man, 49, with the help of fugitive accomplices stormed the apartment of his countrymen in Naif area at night on Nov.13, 2016, prosecutors explained to the Criminal Court.

They restrained him, tied him up, threatened to knife him then sealed his mouth shut using duct tape. They made off with $3,000, Yuan5,200, Dhs300, three mobile phones and three passports.

The valuables belonged to him and his two flatmates who were asleep in another room. Prison wardens failed to present him from his detention at the Naif Police Station. The hearing was deferred to Nov.27.

An Emirati warrant officer, 32, narrated that they received an alert at around 9.30am that a gang of four robbers stormed an apartment on the building’s first floor after forcefully pushing its door open.

“We found him with multiple injuries. Surveillance cameras showed them entering the building. We identified the defendant who was a repeat offender. Upon his arrest, he confessed to have taken part in the crime,” said the warrant officer.
