Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki: People you would hate to travel with

We all enjoy travelling, it is one of the many ways we can escape the stress caused by staying in the same place for a very long time. But let’s remember that travelling can be a stress itself if not done properly regardless of how far you go, where you are going to, or how long you are staying.

One of the major reasons why your travels might be ruined is based on whom you are travelling with. Think about it, it can take just one conflict or nuisance from one person to kill your vacation mood. They say you don’t know a person until you have walked a mile in his/her shoes, however I believe you don’t really know a person until you have travelled with him/her abroad.

Let us look at the different types of people that you would hate to travel with:

1.
The Polar Opposite: This person is the complete opposite of you; whatever you want to do then he/she will make it his/her ultimate goal to give you what you don’t want. If you are in a new place and you want to do lots of activities then this guy/girl will spend most of his/her time relaxing and doing nothing, and vice versa. So precious time will be lost because both of you will be trying to find an equilibrium of rest and activity until you are at each other’s throats.

2.
The Unadventurous: Imagine you are in Paris, London, San Francisco or any one of the major fine-dining capitals of the world and you’re asking your friend about where you want to have dinner and he/she says “McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut or TGIF ”...What is wrong with you? You are in a country where there are plenty of delicious things to try out and you want to eat the same thing that you just had hours before you boarded the plane to get here? This type of person is my personal least favourite, especially since I watch a lot of cooking shows and yearn for something different. A change of scenery also includes a change of palate.

3. The Child Herder: God help us with this one; this is the person who brings his/her kids along including babies that require constant care yet give out constant despair with all the crying and other demonic behaviour. Next time you ask someone to come along then try asking them to come alone instead. Children are the bane of the joyous vacation moods that adults worked hard to attain; in fact I believe that children should travel when they are old enough to not need to be carried, taken to the toilet or be fed by parents. Beware of this one, he/she might say they are travelling then BOOM he/she goes ahead and books flight tickets and rooms for all his/her children.

4. The Fashion Model: Sorry guys, this is not what you might think it is; this is the person who thinks he/she would look good in anything regardless of atmosphere, so if you see a person walking in Bangkok’s humid downtown while wearing a long fur coat then that’s him/her. They would sacrifice comfort (which is a must for travel clothing) for the sake of outrageousness; often wearing weird colours and expensive clothing that attract unwanted attention.

5.
The Picky One: Never happy with anything until all of his/her requirements are fulfilled, nothing much to say about this one except avoid with extreme prejudice and resort to extermination if deemed necessary.

6. The Duty Free Addict: Ok, you have 10 minutes to board the plane but where is your travel partner? He/she is on the other side of the terminal doing some shopping and won’t come to the boarding gate until he/she has at least 50 kilos worth of Duty Free shopping.

And now you understand why I prefer to travel alone, travelling is not solely for the sake of changing the scenery; it is for the sake of changing faces as well. Travel safe, fun and uninterrupted my dear friend!
