Capturing the changing social fabric of Bengal

DUBAI: The second edition of 'Abhijaan', the Bengali Film Festival in Dubai, takes off today in the city.

The festival will run from February 5 - 7 at the Conference Centre, Knowledge Village, Dubai.

Among the films to be screened are Chatushkone, Teenkahon, Ek Phali Rodh, Byomkesh Phire Elo and Ebar Shabor.

Teenkahon (Three Obsessions) is a triptych film in Bengali helmed by debutant filmmaker Bauddhayan Mukherji. It is a rare international art house film from Bengal which, as a piece of social document, tries to capture the changing face of morality, the degeneration of values, the increasing pollution of the spoken language and the changing social fabric of Bengal through three stories.

Interestingly, Bauddhayan loves writing – he is the only living Bengali poet to have been featured in Penguin’s Anthology of Indian Nonsense.

A student of South Point School, Bauddhayan like all other Bengalis, was good at academics but his mind always lay elsewhere. When he was only 11, he was gifted a copy of the book Ekei Boley Shooting (All About Shooting) written by Satyajit Ray, and that changed his life forever. At that age he decided to become a filmmaker.

Ever since, Bauddhayan has followed his heart and walked in the footsteps of his role model. After school, Bauddhayan started majoring in Economics at St Xavier’s College – and that too because legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray had studied economics! Today Bauddhayan runs his own production house called Little Lamb Films and is considered a pathbreaker in Indian advertising filmmaking.

In 2010, Bauddhayan went on to win the prestigious Silver Lion at Cannes – the Oscars of ad films.
