Marathon eighth-wicket stand sparks Knights’ victory

JOHANNESBURG: A marathon eighth-wicket stand of 252 helped Knights complete an unlikely 10-wicket win over defending champions Titans in the South African Cricket Series here on Sunday.

Struggling at 190-7 in reply to the Titans’ first innings 335, Knights hit back with a 252-run eighth-wicket stand between Rudi Second, who hit a double century, and Dillon du Preez who made a ton.

Knights climbed to 475 and after bowling out winless bottom team Titans for 181, they needed only 42 runs to win, which undefeated openers Michael Erlank (25) and Gihahn Cloete (15) supplied.

Victory at Willowmoore Park in an eastern Johannesburg suburb lifted the Bloemfontein-based Knights one place to fourth — 17 points behind leaders Cape Cobras with three rounds of matches left.

Titans have lost five matches and drawn one. Next week the Titans visit Gauteng neighbours Highveld Lions, who are serious title challengers after whipping the Cobras this weekend.
