PALAKKAD: An aged couple, who had sought police protection alleging threat to their lives, was found murdered at their home at Tholanoor, near Kottayi, here in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to police sources, Poolaykkal Parambil Swaminathan, 72, was found in a pool of blood inside the house with his throat slit. His wife Premakumari, 62, was strangled and her body was found in the same room where her husband’s body was found.

Their daughter-in-law, Sheeja, was spotted inside the kitchen of the house with hands and legs tied and mouth stuffed with cloths. She was admitted to Government District Hospital here with injuries later.

Police said that Premakumari was smothered to death with a pillow and Swaminathan was attacked with a weapon.

“The incident took place sometime between 12am and 6am on Wednesday. The daughter-in-law has been hospitalised. She is not in a position to speak yet,” Alathoor circle inspector KA Elizabeth said.

The murder of the old couple took place at Tholanoor which comes under the Alathoor station limits. The couple’s two sons were away at the time of the murders, sources said.

On Wednesday, police took a man into custody in connection with the murder. Paravur native Sudarshan, who is a friend of Sheeja, was nabbed from Palakkad bus stand.

The reports suggest that he murdered the couple for opposing his relationship with Sheeja.

The news of the twin murder came to light when the woman who supplied milk to the house found Sheeja lying injured inside the kitchen.

Senior police officials, including District Police Superintendent in-charge Debesh Kumar Behera, reached the spot and began investigation. Fingerprint experts also visited the site.

Police say the gang which attacked the couple comprised more than two people and in order to remove all evidences, they had sprayed chilly powder on the floor.

According to relatives of the couple, Swaminathan had approached Alathoor police a week ago seeking protection to life and property. In his petition, Swaminathan had expressed fear that he and his wife may be killed as there were attempts on their lives on earlier occasions.
