DUBAI: A visitor who attempted transiting through Dubai with 7.8kg of cocaine has failed to convince a court to annul his 10-year-jail term and Dhs50,000 fine plus deportation.

The European, 60, was intercepted at the Dubai International Airport with a bag containing the cocaine on May.11.2018, Airport Police Station records showed. In court he contended he was a victim of framing.

“I am not guilty. I am a drugs planting case victim. I was not taking them anywhere and I was even not aware there was cocaine in the bag,” he contended and added, “The bag was not for me. God is the witness.”

The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced him to ten years in jail to be followed deportation. It also ordered him to pay a fine worth Dhs50, 000. He appealed while arguing he was framed. However, the Appeals Court rejected his acquittal plea.

On the record, an Emirati customs inspector, 29, said a Dubai Police Antinarcotics Department sergeant suspected the defendant’s travel details. He was coming from Sao Paulo-Brazil transiting to Guinea. The sergeant suspected he was carrying drugs.

A customs officer passed the defendant’s bag in the baggage scanner. “The officer spotted suspicious lumps stuffed in numerous sachets in the bag. He notified me about it and tasked me to search the bag manually,” explained the inspector.

The defendant showed up to pick the bag from the conveyor belt. The inspector stopped him and asked him whether it was his. He said yes. The inspector opened it before him and removed many empty sachets from the top.

Under the empty ones there was a heap of others stuffed with a suspicious substance. The defendant contended the empty sachets belonged to him. However, he insisted that the filled ones were not his and he knew nothing about them.

He further claimed he received the empty ones from a man in Sao Paulo who tasked him to deliver them to his acquaintance residing in Guinea. Police detained him and referred the sachets to the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology. A forensic report confirmed the substance was cocaine.
