ON Christmas Eve, almost all major shopping centres witnessed a massive turn out as Christian expatriates in the country hurried out for their last minute shopping with religious fervour.
The UAE has a large number of Christian expatriates and many of them went out to various shopping centres to stock up on Christmas decorations, gifts, trees and other holiday must-haves.
Almost all major shopping centres in Sharjah and Dubai not only set up exclusive corners in their stores for Christmas shoppers, but also much of the staff could be seen clad in traditional attire with some being dressed up as Santa Claus, distributing candies to kids.
Ongoing promotions
Talking to The Gulf Today, various visitors at some of the shopping centres pointed out that their unending shopping lists would soon come to an end as the ongoing promotions on the eve of Christmas was proving to be a good bargain for them.
Arvin, one shopper at Safeer Mall, Sharjah said the promotions that are ongoing for winter and Christmas season have been a success, especially for customers who want to purchase gift items.
“During the whole of last week, I was busy in my office in Dubai to complete a presentation. Today’s (Friday) weekly holiday is the only day left for me to buy some gift items for my family and friends,” he said.
He pointed out that the mall has set up the store so that all related goods are in one corner, which has proved to be a time-saving factor for customers.
Buying gifts
“I had planned to purchase some ornaments, especially different varieties of lights, bells and other such things and the price range is attractive so could buy things not only for myself, but also to gift to my friends,” he added.
Michael, another expatriate from India, said that the enjoyment of shopping for gift items, especially during Christmas related is a wonderful thing, especially when one has the option to avail of the promotions.
“Although the prices of Christmas trees are higher as compared to last year, there are many varieties and sizes available, which are still in the reach of a low-budget customer,” he said.
Many customers pointed out that the celebrations will be come to an end on Saturday evening, when they are either going to visit their friends or receive gifts to express their joy and share gifts.
