Arroyo children campaign for her reelection bid

MANILA: Two children are campaigning for the reelection bid of their mother former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is under hospital arrest for the non-bailable complaint of plunder, their close allies disclosed on Sunday.

Sources in Arroyo’s office confirmed that Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo and sister Maria Lourdes have taken up the cudgels of campaigning for their mother who is running for reelection as congresswoman for her home province of Pampanga in the May 13 polls less than a month away.

But it was Mikey who volunteered to take up the major brunt of the campaign because of his experience as a former congressman who gave way to his mother in the May 2010 polls, said the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Mikey, the sources disclosed, has been meeting Arroyo’s campaign leaders and delivering speeches for his mother who is favoured to win in her reelection bid.

A special court called the Sandiganbayan has ordered Arroyo’s arrest in a government medical facility in Metro Manila following the filing of a plunder complaint against her, which also carries the maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, the country’s chief graft-buster, filed the complaint for Arroyo’s alleged involvement in the misuse of $8 million in the intelligence funds of the state-run Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office that operates lotto patronised by millions of Filipinos.
