CHENNAI: Megastar Rajnikanth finally announced he will float his own party. The much-awaited political plunge of the actor into politics came at the end of a six-day conclave he held with office-bearers of his fans association, known as mantram in Tamil.

“This is the compulsion of time,” said the 67-year-old star as he quoted from the Bhagavat Gita and announced in clear words: “I’m entering politics, certainly.”

The Maharastrian who captured Kollywood with his inimitable style said the guiding slogan of his party will be “do good, speak good, and only good will happen.”

He said in chaste Tamil: “Everything needs to be changed. Spiritual politics needs to be ushered in. I want volunteers who will keep vigil and who will not go to any official for selfish need.

“It is time for a change. I don’t want cadres...I want saviours, who will not work for their own benefit, but question wrongdoing.”

“At this juncture, if I don’t enter politics, it will be a shame on me as people have showered me with so much love and affection. This is not cinema. It is reality,’ he said as the gathering lapsed into frenzy.

“I know it is no easy task to contest in the elections. But, I am confident that I will have the both God’s blessings and support of the people.”

Rajni promised his fans that his party will contest all 234 state assembly seats, but gave no indication of alliances that he might opt for. Neither did he give a firm date for the launch, but asserted he will do it before the next state assembly election which is due after three-and-a half years only.

As in the past history, the fans associations will be the springboard for his leap. It is known that Rajni will focus on an anti-corruption crusade.

“In the name of democracy, politicians are robbing us of our money in our own land. There is a need to change the system from the base to fight corruption,” he told fans gathered at his Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam or wedding hall. Honesty, hard work and growth are essential features that the party workers have to follow, he said.

The other Kollywood megastar, Kamal Hassan, hailed Ranji’s decision.

“I welcome brother Rajni’s social responsibility and political entry.” DMK working president MK Stalin said, “Anybody can enter politics. We wish Rajinikanth for his decision to involve in public life.”

State Minister D. Jayakumar said, “In a democratic nation, everyone has the right to enter politics. We also welcome him. But if he had made allegations against the AIADMK government, I would reply to him. For now, he has spoken in general.”

State BJP president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “We welcome actor Rajnikanth’s political entry with motto of corruption free good governance.”

Amitabh Bachchan tweeted: “My dear friend, my colleague and a humble considerate human, Rajnikanth, announces his decision to enter politics... My best wishes to him for his success.”

Anupam Kher wrote, “On the last day of 2017 comes the biggest news maker of the Year: Rajnikanth joins politics. Jai Ho.”

The Congress welcomed the announcement. Congress spokesperson actor Khushboo Sundar tweeted, “Rajnikanth announces his political plunge...Anybody who thinks can make a difference to the ideas and has an ideology, aspires for harmonious India, feels the pain of losing secularism to communalism and dreams of a democratic India, should come to politics.

“We know that Mr Rajnikanth believes in inclusive democracy and development. We wish him the all the best in his endeavours.”
