CAIRO: The General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), Egypt’s state grain buyer, said it had signed a contract for the import of 80,000 tonnes of rice outside the tender process.

Vice Chairman Mamdouh Abdel Fattah not revealed the price of the contract or the supplier, but he said that the quantity could increase to more than 80,000 tonnes. Government had directed GASC to import the rice immediately. GASC said the rice would arrive within a week to ten days.

The Supply Ministry said it would buy one million tonnes of paddy rice next month when harvest for the new season begins to stockpile as a strategic reserve that could last for up to a year.
