‘Rogue’ policemen angers new Manila cabinet official

MANILA: A visibly irate cabinet official on Friday denounced “rogue” members who continued to embarrass and bring disgrace to the 160,000-strong Philippine National Pollice (PNP).

Retired military chief general Eduardo Ano, the newly-appointed officer-in-charge of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), was referring to the 18 police officers and men who were either caught sleeping or drinking liquor while on duty in Metro Manila.

“What they did brings a huge embarrassment and disgrace to the whole police organisation,” Ano said in Filipino as he ordered the disarming of the 18 policemen and the filing of administrative charges of dereliction of duty and conduct unbecoming against them.

“There is absolutely no reason,” Ano stressed, “for them to be lazy or corrupt since their salaries have been doubled. But instead of being on their toes in patrolling and apprehending criminals, the policemen slept or drank liquor on the job.”

The 18 erring policemen were caught during a surprise inspection conducted by Director Oscar Albayalde, the chief of the Metro Manila regional police command, in the cities of Pasay and Muntinlupa late on Tuesday night.

On Friday, Albayalde disclosed he ordered the immediate relief of the police chiefs of Pasay, Muntinlupa and San Juan City for their poor performance including their failure to discipline their men.

He added a similar inspection he conducted starting late on Thursday night until dawn on Friday led to the discovery of at least 10 more policemen sleeping while on duty in the neighboring cities of Caloocan and Quezon.
