CHENNAI: Megastar Kamal Hassan confirmed on his 63rd birthday on Tuesday that he is indeed entering politics and would announce the formation of his own party after a tour of Tamil Nadu. He would tour Tamil Nadu and would make a formal announcement of his party also in January.

Addressing his fans at the GRT Convention Centre in Chennai on Tuesday, Kamal said: “This meeting is to announce I have arrived in politics. I have films to finish, it’s a business commitment. I will give a demo of how our platform works. We will tell you all in detail.

I am in no hurry. I have waited many years for change. I need support.

“I will travel around Tamil Nadu to understand people’s problems, following which I will name the party.” He indicated it would take three months for him to plan his trip.

Kamal launched his digital platform “maiamwhistle.” The app, he said, was an attempt to blow the whistle on the problems the public faced.

He said the official launch will take place in January.

Kamal, who cancelled his birthday celebrations to spend time with victims of the recent floods who are sheltered in medical camps, dismissed reports of a fund-raising for his party. Kamal said: “No tainted money will come into my party. Forget about local polls, the question is if we’re ready.

So we are looking at longer time. Give me time for my manifesto and my policy. I need to work on it.” He visited a medical camp set up by his fan club Narpani Iyakkam (Welfare Movement) at Annapoorna Marriage Hall, CTH Road... and rain-affected area at Naryanapuram, S. Kolathur Road, Pallikaranai, next to Balaji Dental College.

Kamal last week pledged to send about 500,000 volunteers and supporters for refurbishment of water bodies in the wake of the torrential downpour and resultant water logging in parts of the state including Chennai.

He explained to his fans on Twitter why he cancelled the birthday bash. “To those who love me and dislike the idea of my cancelling my birthday celebrations,” he tweeted. “Tomorrow is just another day if you just celebrate and fail to seize it. If we can make it better in pursuit of a cause then we become the change we seek.” The only southern actor with four national awards for best actor in his kitty, Kamal Hassan has the rare distinction of being a megastar too.
