ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Court of Cassation upheld the Court of Appeal’s verdict to sentence a GCC citizen to 7 years in jail for premeditatedly attempting to kill his friend over an argument on a social media site. The defendant was also sentenced to 2 years in jail and fined Dhs50,000 for abusing hashish, amphetamine, methamphetamine and clonazepam and possessing methamphetamine.

According to the official records, the public prosecution convicted the defendant and two others of intending to kill the victim. They prepared a knife for the purpose. The victim sustained multiple injuries and fell on the ground but did not die as he was rushed to the hospital.

The defendant’s accomplices were sentenced to six months in jail and fined Dhs10,000 each after being convicted of abusing narcotics but were acquitted of the attempted murder charge. The defendants appealed against the verdict. However, the Court of Appeal accepted the appeal in form and rejected it in content, obligating the defendants to pay the judicial fees.

During the public prosecution’s interrogations and in front of the Court of First Instance, the defendant confessed that the victim was his friend and used to communicate with him on WhatsApp. On the day of the incident, an argument took place between the two and the defendant asked the victim to meet him in a garage, he said. He added that as soon as the victim got down of the car he was in, the defendant ran to him and stabbed him several times in the right and left arms and the left waist, intending to kill him.

After the victim had fallen on the ground, the defendant continued to stab him until the victim told him he was dying.
