Baggage screening for safer airports

DUBAI: A Dubai-based technological firm, Nuctech, has unveiled a proof baggage screening gadget, a CT scan improved in size and dimension, to help thoroughly detect the presence of contraband.

“Over 99 per cent of contraband is carried via baggage and not people, but the screening gadgets used in regional airports have some limitation in detecting them except the CT scan technology,” which Nuctech unveiled at the concluded Inter security exhibition meet. CT detectable and common contraband items include liquids, drugs of different forms, cash levels and foreign currencies, batteries and explosive materials among others.

“The CT technology has not been popular despite its proof baggage screening because they have been slow and inconvenient in size thus making their integration difficult. This is what Nuctech has done away with by introducing the Kylin machine,” said the Business Development Manager of Nuctech, Imran Sayed.

“We conducted the research with the second top-ranked Chinese institution after Beijing, Tsinghua Univeristy,” he said.

Sayed said one regional airport, three in Europe and a “few others in Asia and America” have connected to the Nuctech CT scan because we have integrated 2D and 3D technology into a single machine.

He presented the paper “Unveiling a Futureproof Baggage Screening Solution: Kylin,” in a session, “Security and Protection of Critical Infrastructure” during the three-day Intersec Exhibition Conferences held at the Dubai World Trade Exhibition on Jan.22-24.

Sayed said the gadget is able to detect a “deeply hidden material – even when shrouded in plastic sheath and folded inside a laptop”. Previously, CT scanners have been used for more than a decade to screen checked bags that go to a plane’s cargo hold; but it has not been able to use the apply the same technology because of variance in size and limitation in speed.
