SHARJAH: Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) has made a final call for submissions for its Noon Arts programme’s ‘Huwiyyati’ (My Identity) Award, a first-of-its-kind initiative from the organisation that provides a premium leisure and recreation platform for young girls and women in the UAE.

Launched to celebrate individual identity and honour creative, talented female artists, the Huwiyyati Award is in keeping with SLC’s commitment to supporting the field of conceptual arts and enhancing cultural growth in the UAE and in particular Sharjah. SLC is accepting applications for the award up until Sept.10.

“The Huwiyyati Award embodies SLC’s dedication to supporting talented creative artists in the field of painting and photography and encourage them to display their artworks in the gallery. SLC is committed to promoting women artists and providing them with the opportunity to participate in festivals, exhibitions and other cultural events,” said Shaikha Al Suwaidi, Manager of SLC’s Collage Talent Centre.

‘Painting’ and ‘Photography’ are the two key categories in the Huwiyyati Award, with each featuring two subcategories. The first subcategories, the ‘Noon Artist Award – Painting’ and the ‘Noon Artist Award – Photography,’ are designed for established artists and offer prize money worth Dhs10,000 each. The qualifying age group for the two subcategories is 25-40 years. The second subcategories, the ‘Noon Rising Star Award – Painting’ and the ‘Noon Rising Star Award – Photography,’ are valued at Dhs5,000 each and have been designed to recognise fresh talents in painting and photography for female artists aged 18-24 years old.

The criteria for participation in the Huwiyyati Award include the condition that the artwork is created by the artist herself and not co-created or plagiarised. Participants are allowed to submit one entry per category and the work should be new and never have previously won a prize or award. The winning artworks will be displayed from Oct.24-30, 2017 at SLC’s Noon Gallery.

The Huwiyyati Award is organised by the Collage Talent Centre, SLC’s hub for education in the arts, which aims to develop artistic skills and elevate capabilities across the spectrum of creative fields. Its activities include classes for pottery, ceramic flower arrangement, art and sketching, and ballet, piano playing, language, cookery, and etiquette, amongst others.

“At SLC, we are dedicated to supporting and empowering women in all aspects of their lives. We provide a relaxing and nurturing environment where they can learn, enjoy sports and cultivate their favourite hobbies using our state-of-the-art facilities. Our unique premium services have enabled positive changes in women’s lives by helping them reach their goals, giving them new targets to aim for and showing them that there is nothing they cannot accomplish,” she added.

Since its inception in 1982, SLC – a subsidiary of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs – has organised events that relate to society, art, health and charity, with its activities and events including bazaars, exhibitions, sports competitions, seminars and forums.
