Gattis late homer lifts Braves over Pirates

PITTSBURGH: Atlanta pinch-hitter Evan Gattis connected for a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the MLB-leading Braves to a 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.

Atlanta brothers B J and Justin Upton homered in the same game for the second time this season as the Braves improved to a major league-best 13-2.

Elsewhere, the Colorado Rockies overcame frigid conditions for rout the New York Mets, Arizona broke clear in the 12th inning to beat the New York Yankees, Boston stretched their winning streak to six games by downing Cleveland, Seattle edged Detroit in a pitchers’ duel, Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of San Francisco, and St. Louis edged Philadelphia.

Atlanta’s Gattis hit a sinker from Jared Hughes (1-1) into the left-field bleachers for the first pinch-hit homer of his career, while Justin Upton move to the top of the MLB homers list with his ninth of the season.

Braves reliever Anthony Varvaro (1-0) took the win and Craig Kimbrel worked a perfect ninth for the save.
