SHARJAH: Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi has instructed Sharjah Social Services Department to indemnify the fishermen who were affected by bad weather conditions and meet all their needs.

Sheikh Sultan’s gesture came after he had listened to a phone call by UAE national Abu Omer on the direct line programme in which he underscored the necessity for indemnifying the fishermen whose boats were damaged or sank during fishing voyages.

Abu Omer made his request after he had read statements by Sulaiman Al Khadeem, Deputy Chairman of the Eastern Coast Fishermen’s Societies who is also Head of the Dibba Fujairah Fishermen Society, that the total number of damaged boats was estimated at 150 and that the owners of these boats were now threatened by the fact that the licences of their boats would be cancelled and withdrawn if not renewed because they did not own alternative boats.

“We must support fishermen and give them a hand to encourage them to continue to be engaged in this profession,” Sheikh Sultan said.

Sheikh Sultan noted the great efforts exerted by fishermen and the risks they run during their practice of their profession, which led many of them to lose their lives.

The Ruler also instructed the broadcasters of the direct line programme to listen to people’s complaints and solve their problems.
