Emirates’ call for tolerance is well-timed

Hundreds of years ago when game-changing and cutting-edge messages of Messengers of God filled the air we breathe and the blood that flows in our veins and the thoughts that form the basis of our very beings, the Holy Speakers didn’t want their invaluable words to become weapons of rift. When they walked the earth and when they made water flow and when they made mountains move, they didn’t want us to fight over the fruits that the earth offers, fight over the water that is everybody’s natal privilege and convert the mountains into regular stations of violent political and religious conflicts. When they made satanic designs lick the dust and when they made evil crouch and when they made world history bend, they didn’t want us to fritter away the harmonious universe, which they had created with the greatest divine gift: sacrifice.

But unfortunately everything that was desired by the men, who selflessly soldiered the civilisational process to its immaculate health, is now piece by piece going up in smoke as the flames of hatred grow from strength to strength, thanks to the politics of intolerance. And it’s getting harsher with every sunrise.

Therefore, the United Arab Emirates’ call to promote the tenets of tolerance couldn’t be better timed. President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2019 as the ‘Year of Tolerance,’ highlighting the UAE as a global capital for tolerance, via its various legislative and policy-oriented goals to enhance the role of the country in instilling the values of co-existence and peace in local, regional and international communities.

Sheikh Khalifa said the Year of Tolerance was an extension of the Year of Zayed, as it upholds the values of tolerance and co-existence that the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan established among the people of the UAE. “Instilling values of tolerance carries on Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and teachings,” Sheikh Khalifa affirmed, adding that it is one of the most important attributes that we can impact on our people and the global community to ensure the safety, stability and happiness of peoples across the world.”

The UAE leaders have more than earned their ethical right to talk, and at length, about tolerance because 200 nationalities live, work and enjoy as a flawless communal mix in the UAE and have been doing so for decades. It is something it should be rightly proud of because we are experiencing a world where harmless marriage parties are being bombed. As an expatriate I have never had the misfortune of reading headers about communal clashes, a regular heart-burner elsewhere.

Well, I would like to point out that tolerance is another nine-letter word for sacrifice. The message is simple. Tolerance calls for sacrificing our self-serving motives and making room, sometimes at our costs, for others’ faiths, customs and way of life. That’s what the Holy Speakers cherished and the UAE leaders respect. Let’s recall their words before the heretic takes over.
