DUBAI: Al Nasr came away from Rashid Bin Saeed Stadium with a valuable 1-0 victory over Ajman in matchweek 16 of the Arabian Gulf League.

Both sides failed to pose a serious threat on target throughout the first half, with only a couple of shy attempts that mounted to nothing, most notably an Ajman counter-attack that was wasted as three players broke free behind Al Nasr backline.

The Blues finally broke the deadlock with 15 minutes to go when Marcelo Cirino latched onto a Khalifa Mubarak cross-field pass to fire on the half-volley, leaving goalkeeper helpless to save.

The Brazilian’s strike proved the difference as Ivan Jovanovic continued reviving the Dubai side’s fortunes with three wins in four matches since his arrival.

A third win on the trot takes Al Nasr’s tally to 26 points in fourth place while a second consecutive loss for Ajman keeps them seventh in the table.

Meanwhile, an added time Vander Viera strike handed Sharjah an important 1-0 win over Shabab Al Ahli at Rashid Stadium.

The best chance of an otherwise uneventful first half came through Moon Chang-jin who was sent through on goal by Waleed Abbas but his effort from inside the area ended on the wrong side of Sharjah’s post.

The hosts thought they had opened the scoring when Ismael Al Hammadi fired on the volley from Hassan Ibrahim’s cross, but saw his shot bounce off the upright at the hour mark.

The match seemed headed to a stalemate until Abbas brought down Otabek Shukurov inside the box prompting the referee to point to the spot awarding Sharjah a penalty kick in the dying seconds of the game. Viera stepped up and drove his shot into the bottom corner to settle the tie for the King.

With the win, Sharjah overtake Ajman into seventh place with 19 points and are now within one point of Shabab Al Ahli in sixth.
