ABU DHABI: The Supreme Federal Court upheld the Appellate Court’s ruling sentencing a suspect to life term and deportation on charges of smuggling drugs and psychotropic substances from Iran for trafficking, in addition to abusing the same.

According to the case papers, the suspect was caught after receiving a call from the radar centre about a boat in the country’s local waters. When authorities attempted to stop the suspect’s boat, he refused to stop, and was later forced to stop. On searching through the boat, the authorities caught the suspect with drugs. The suspect admitted in the prosecution’s investigation that he had smuggled the drugs along with psychotropic substances from Iran.

The prosecution sent the suspect to the court in Dibba, Al Fujairah on three charges, smuggling Opium, Methadone, Hashish, Parazolam, Pregabalin, and Diazepam for trafficking and abusing psychotropic substances, Tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient of Hashish.

The Court of First Instance sentenced the suspect to ten years in jail and slapped him with a fine of Dhs50,000 for the first and second charges, besides deportation, and two years in jail for the third charge. The court also ordered the confiscation of the seizures and ordered him to pay the fees.

The Abu Dhabi Federal Appellate Court accepted the Public Prosecution’s appeal and rejected the suspect’s.

The Court sentenced the suspect to life jail and deportation, against which he appealed. However, the Public Prosecution demanded the court to reject his appeal.
