ABU DHABI: Noura Bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, has opened the “Untold Stories Retold” exhibition, at Abu Dhabi’s Warehouse421.

The “Untold Stories Retold” presents two exhibitions from the National Pavilion UAE previously shown at the Venice Biennale between 2016 and 2017 for the first time in the UAE.

The exhibition gives an overview of the UAE’s involvement in the Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia), with an introductory section exploring the National Pavilion UAE’s participation in the Venice Biennale, and a rare behind-the-scenes look at the making of a national exhibition.

The exhibition is on display until 24th June, 2018, at Warehouse421, a hub for creativity in Abu Dhabi that is dedicated to supporting learning, making, exhibition and commercial activity relevant to the local and regional creative industries. A cultural destination in Abu Dhabi where transformed warehouses become a platform for artistic expression, understanding, and further development of the UAE’s creative community.

The Venice Biennale is a 123-year old global event that brings together people from different countries, backgrounds and creative disciplines to immerse themselves in some of the world’s greatest art, architecture and culture. A truly global gathering, more than 85 countries host their own national pavilion in its alternating annual art and architecture exhibitions.

Al Kaabi said, “Each year the National Pavilion UAE develops thoughtful and high-quality exhibitions to be presented in Venice, a real point of pride for the nation. They explore diverse and often under-celebrated aspects of the UAE’s arts and architecture scene, and demonstrate to the world that the UAE is a dynamic cultural center, with deep history and rich discourse. The Venice Biennale is a powerful platform to share untold stories from the UAE with international audiences, and in the process, to showcase the depth of our history, the richness of our contemporary culture and the infinite talents of our people.”

Liborio Stellino, Italian Ambassador to the UAE, said, “The Venice Biennale is one of the world’s most significant cultural events, with more than 615,000 visitors attending in 2017. The UAE’s exhibitions highlight some of this unique nation’s art and architecture practices to Italian and international audiences, and deepen understanding of the UAE’s culture. This exhibition will continue to raise awareness of the Venice Biennale and the UAE’s participation there, helping to strengthen the bond of friendship and cooperation between our countries.”

Angela Migally, Executive Director of the Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation and Commissioner of the National Pavilion UAE, said, “I am delighted that new audiences will be able to engage with these significant exhibitions as they are presented in the UAE for the first time return to the UAE. The UAE’s participation in the Venice Biennale supports our rapidly emerging cultural and creative industries, providing a platform for dialogue and deep thinking, and our curators make an invaluable contribution to our national discourse. Each exhibition is built on a wealth of important research, and bringing them home enables us to enhance and share our understanding of the stories they tell.”
