HONOLULU: President Barack Obama kicked off his Hawaiian vacation with a round of golf on Saturday.

The first family arrived at Kailua, on the east end of Oahu, shortly after midnight on Saturday.

The family plans to spend Christmas on the island, as they have every year since Obama became president.

Obama left the family vacation home late Saturday morning for a round of golf, according to a White House pool report.

Obama hit the links at the Kaneohe Klipper golf course, an 18-hole championship golf course located at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe Bay.

Obama has played there before on past Christmas vacations.

Obama’s golfing party included White House Chef Sam Kass, White House Trip Director and frequent previous golfing partner Marvin Nicholson, and longtime friends Bobby Titcomb and Mike Ramos, according to the White House.

The president was to attend the funeral of the late Sen. Daniel Inouye (Democrat-Hawaii) in Honolulu on Sunday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

The White House has not announced any other public events during the Obamas’ stay on the island.
